CAREER REVIEW:
ABBOTT LABS, SAN DIEGO, CA, (Point of Care - Rapid Diagnostics R&D)
MANAGER, MECHANICAL DESIGN          MAR 2019 – FEB 2025

Responsibility: Controlled the architecture for all elements of the mechanical design
Achievements:
▪ Early Impact: Made a significant, day-one, difference on a project that had been stalled for 6–8 months before my arrival. Proposed a completely different approach, which was quickly adopted by the group, propelling the project forward
▪ User-Focused Design: Advocated for a customer-focused design philosophy to create user-friendly products, moving away from mere scientific experiments
▪ Human Factors Team: Instrumental in identifying the need for and helping to create the Human Factors team within the division
▪ Design for Manufacture: Championed the philosophy of design for manufacture (DFM) and fought for best practices when necessary
▪ Problem Solving: Gained a reputation for problem-solving and creative solutions. Often drafted into other projects to help kick-start them when they had hit a design wall
▪ Regulatory Success: Designed elegant solutions for concepts that convinced the FDA that we could reduce end user risk of injury significantly below their threshold
▪ Cross-Team Collaboration: Worked with other Abbott R&D teams to rethink the current design approach and challenge assumptions. As a team, we found a new approach that led to a more user-focused product with design for manufacture built in from the start, all while meeting the budget
▪ Leadership: Ran a small team of three direct-report Mechanical Design Engineers and served as Technical Lead for the broader team of engineers

STG AEROSPACE, CWMBRAN, WALES, U.K. (LED aircraft cabin lighting)
LEAD MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER          APR 2015 – AUG 2018 (Left to emigrate to the USA)

Responsibility: Designed and developed all elements of mechanical design. Ran a team of 3 engineers.
Represented the department in Senior Leadership meetings and program reviews
Achievements:
▪ Customer Collaboration: Worked with internal teams and airline customers to determine their requirements. Utilized and interpreted manufacturers' CAD data
▪ Airbus RGB LED System: Led the design of a new Airbus RGB LED system, focused on minimizing build and installation time
▪ Boeing Reading Light Design: Designed mechanical aspects of a Boeing interfacing square-light beam LED reading light, a finalist in the APEX Awards for Best Passenger Comfort Innovation category
▪ Overseas Sourcing: Introduced overseas sourcing of injection mold tooling, enabling a quicker turnaround time to market and better return on resource investment
▪ Design Philosophy: Advocated for a design for manufacture (DFM) philosophy and risk reduction exercises to improve the design cycle to market
▪ Team Management: Managed and mentored engineers with a range of experience, from junior to principal

EATON, CWMBRAN, WALES, U.K. (Fire alarm signaling devices)
SENIOR MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER          MAY 2013 – APR 2015

Responsibility: Design and development of all elements of the mechanical design. Lead designer
Achievements:
▪ Sound Output
Enhancement: Designed two new product bases to achieve an improvement in sound output that could not be attained through hardware or software attempts
▪ Interference Detection Procedure: Implemented a procedure for checking PCB to plastic housing interfaces to detect interference issues, eliminating costly PCB or molding re-spins
▪ Certification Success: Redesigned an existing product mounting system that was failing certification; the redesigned system now passes certification
▪ European Focus Group: Invited to join a European focus group to create a best practice guide for injection molding and prototyping processes for the Eaton Safety Division
▪ Leadership Program Selection: Requested to be part of Eaton’s UK intern and leadership program selection committee
▪ Client Collaboration: Served as the point of contact for Siemens, Panasonic, Tyco, and Chubb during the
design of their products

HARMAN INT., BRIDGEND, WALES, U.K. (HIGH-END AUTOMOTIVE SPEAKER SYSTEMS)
SENIOR MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER          OCT 2012 – APR 2013 (left due to site closure)

Responsibility: Design and development of the mechanical elements for high-end (branded) automotive
car speaker systems
Achievements:
▪ BMW Redesign:
Redesigned a BMW part, increasing the grommet insertion force on a clip from 3.2N to
27.3N with minimal tooling costs and within tight time constraints
▪ Mercedes/JBL Cosmetic Grill: Created a complex cosmetic grill from a marketing rendering for
Mercedes/JBL, which passed all impact force testing, using Catia—despite having no formal training on the software at the time
▪ CAD Data Interpretation: Utilized and interpreted raw car makers' CAD data to ensure seamless design
integration into the vehicle cabin

HUNTLEIGH, CARDIFF, WALES, U.K. (MEDICAL DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT –VASCULAR, OBSTETRIC & PATIENT MONITORING)
MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER          FEB 2001 – OCT 2012

Responsibility: Design and development of the mechanical elements for diagnostic medical devices
Achievements:
▪ Product Design Improvements:
Implemented design improvements that significantly enhanced customer perception and boosted market sales
▪ Waterproof Doppler Transducer: Designed the market-leading waterproof Doppler transducer (audio)
▪ HTML-Based Simulation: Created an HTML-based simulation of a product, enabling sales and marketing to secure a lucrative contract with Toshiba Medical without the need for a physical prototype
▪ FDA Compliance: Successfully participated in FDA team inspections, passing with no faults twice
▪ CAPA Leadership: Led Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) teams in root cause failure investigations

PANASONIC (KMEUK), NEWPORT, WALES, U.K. (Telecommunications Div.)
MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER          DEC 1997 – FEB 2001

Responsibility: Ensure that the designs received from Japan were fit for purpose and correct them if they
were not. I quickly became the go-to engineer for injection-molded parts, whether in the UK or abroad in
the Far East. This experience significantly enhanced my communication and technical skills. Deadlines
were always met
Achievements:
▪ Youngest Design Engineer Abroad: Became the youngest Design Engineer, at the time, to be sent abroad for tool trials (just four months after starting as an engineer out of university). With a 100% successful trial outcome
▪ Critical Problem Solving: Quickly identified a failure mode and designed a fix where others had failed,
preventing long-term stoppage of multiple production lines

PERSONAL
I became a U.S. citizen in March 2022. I hold dual US/British Citizenship. I have long enjoyed designing
and building my own computers, which complements my love of online gaming. In my younger days, I
played many sports. I was fortunate enough to be selected to play rugby for my hometown; where I became one of the youngest Captains ever. I also represented my University in rugby, being one of only two
freshmen to make it on the main squad. These days, I satisfy my sports enthusiasm as an observer or
through online gaming.
